Classical music is a reflection of the Indian culture. Its roots go way back into the ancient times where music had a spiritual angle and meant chanting of the vedas (sama veda). It was a channel to reach to the Gods. In the 13th century, which is also known as the medieval period, classical music which originated from the vedas, developed into two independent forms: Hindustani classical music & Carnatic music. Hindustani classical music started to have a Persian flavor to it owing to the interactions during the Mughal rule while Carnatic music remained untouched, retaining its pure form. As time progressed, Hindustani classical music saw the emergence of the Gharana system around the 19th century. Gharana system was based on the concept of lineage where the Gurus of one Gharana passed the training to their disciples only. At a time where the court culture of performing music was fading away, this was an attempt to preserve classical music by adding a unique style. Each Gharana had its own ideology & pedagogy and learning from multiple Gharanas was considered as an insult to the Gurus. It was Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, who bought a shift in this traditional Gurukul system by introducing the concept of music institutions. This popularized Hindustani classical music as well as gave fair opportunity to music lovers to pursue formal training. Over the years, starting right from the ancient period, the way of teaching music has witnessed a gradual shift from Courts to Gharanas, then to Institutions and now online training.
